Essential Oils and Why You Should Try Them

Essential oils are extracted from plants for the purpose of healing, beauty and household cleaning. Aromatherapy is known for healing purposes and is now being used in hospitals such as Vanderbilt in Nashville to help treat patients with anxiety. 

I have been a huge advocate of combining traditional medicine with essential oils to improve our mental and physical health. 

 

 

Essential oils can provide great benefits in a variety of settings. I personally like to use essentials oils at work in my diffuser to calm my mind and help with stress relief or at home before bedtime to help me fall asleep faster. 

 

 

Some of my favorite essential oils and their benefits:

Orange– immune boosting, pick me up, anxiety, depression, alertness, confidence, heart issues and insomnia

Eucalyptus– congestion, asthma, joint pain, hot flashes, bronchitis

Rose- mood lifting, aphrodisiac, wrinkles, panic attacks, unbalanced hormones. Add to your moisturizer for glowing skin. 

Peppermint– helps relieve joint and muscle pain, relief from nausea, helps fight lethargy, colds, vomiting and diarrhea, add to shampoo for dandruff relief, offers a quick pick me up when you are feeling tired, congestion, acid reflux, toothache pain, fever reducer, and works great for migraines and headaches.

Lemon– great to use as an air freshener (add 5 drops to a bottle of water and add in a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol), another great pick me up, energy, anxiety, allergies, kidney stones, balancing ph levels, varicose veins, hand sanitizer, relaxation, and immune stimulant.

Neroli– stretch marks, sleep aid, anxiety, depression, anger management

Basil– mental clarity, anxiety, depression, bee stings, ear infection and bug bites.

Rosemary– focus, concentration, dandruff, confidence, burnout, fatigue and diuretic

Oregano– ulcers, warts, viruses, Confidence, flu, athletes foot, and colds

Frankincense– relaxation, helps boost immunity, panic, helps age spots,  depression, anxiety, scars, reduce wrinkles, reduce stretch marks when combined with grapefruit and coconut oil and thyroid problems.

Grapefruit– reduce cellulite, fear, depression, stress, happiness and peace. Mix grapefruit with coconut oil to help with cellulite on all areas of the body. 

Jasmine– confidence, fear, anger management

Cypress– fatigue, confidence, sore throat, varicose veins and asthma, improves circulation 

Ylang Ylang– anger management, depression, insomnia, hypertension and stress

Geranium– Anxiety, depression, happiness, peace, mood swings, agitation, guilt,

Some oils need a carrier oil mixed before applying to your skin. Common carrier oils used are almond oil, grape seed oil and avocado oil.
