How to Boost Your Immune System

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Our immune system does a great job of protecting us from illness but some times it fails to stop germs from invading and we end up very sick.  No one is completely sure how our immune system works because it can be a complex system. This is why it is important to find ways to boost our immunity to help fight off these invaders that make us sick. Today’s blog is about ways we can boost immunity and hopefully ward off the germs that cause illness.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A can play an important role in helping to boost your immunity and if you have a deficiency. Most people get enough Vitamin A from their diet by eating carrots, fish and leafy vegetables but you might need a supplement if your body is deficient.

Selenium

Selenium plays an important role in the health of our immune system by lowering oxidative stress, which enhances immunity and reduces inflammation. Foods that are rich in selenium include: whole wheat bread, sunflower seeds and tuna.

Elderberry

Elderberry has been known for years for its ability to fight off the flu, colds, and allergies. Several studies indicate that elderberry has the power to boost the immune system. Recently I read an article in the Journal of International Medical Research that stated if taken within the first 48 hours of the flu, it reduced the duration of symptoms within 4 days.

The Golden 3 Turmeric, Ginger & Garlic

All 3 have the power to boost immunity through their anti-inflammatory functions.

Essential Oils

There are quite a few essential oils that can provide support for the immune system. When applied topically, oils like peppermint and eucalyptus can protect against colds and the flu. Stress is a common reason a person’s immune system can be lowered. You can also use lavender oil to keep you relaxed and stress free.

Avoid Sugar

Sugar is everywhere and it is one of the reasons we may show lower white blood cell activities. These cells are responsible for protecting our body. It makes it harder for our bodies to fight bacteria and viruses when we have sugar in the bloodstream.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a great source of  beta-carotene, which is reported to help  to raise the activities of T-cells that may help fight off infection. They are also rich in Vitamin C, which most kids even know helps fight off a cold. If you don’t like sweet potatoes you could try pumpkin which is also a great source of beta-carotene.

Almonds

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin that can protect our cells from damage. Almonds contain a high amount of healthy fat such as Omega-3. You only need a cup of almonds to get your dietary intake.

Yogurt

Most of you probably already know that yogurt is great for the digestive system but it is also key to a healthy immune system. Why? Because your gut is where 25% of your immune cells are and where your good bacteria thrives. Taking a probiotic is really important for a healthy immune system.

If you have any suggestions, leave us a comment. We would love to know ways you boost your immune system too.
