HOW TO TREAT AND PREVENT BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Blackheads, for any person, are the worst. Recently I had a young girl who was 16 years old email me about her issues with acne and blackheads. She talked about how other kids made fun of her and called her crater face and it just broke my heart. She wanted to know what she could do to get rid of her blackheads and acne so she could feel beautiful. Well this led me to do as much research as I could find online. No young girl should have to feel ashamed of her looks or be made fun of. Today’s blog will look at how to prevent, and treat blackheads. We will touch some on whiteheads as well. If you have any  solutions you can offer this young lady  and our other readers that we missed, please comment and share. XOXO

WHAT ARE BLACKHEADS?

Blackheads are a mix of oil and dead skin cells that like to lay in your pores. But what causes them to turn black? When they are exposed to air they become oxidized and this is what makes them their black color. The pores on your face have hair plus sebaceous glands so this is what causes oil. Think about makeup, oil and dead skin mixed together and you see why your pores get clogged up. You can get an open comedone (blackhead) or you can have a closed comedone (Whitehead).

In other words: A blackhead is essentially a hair follicle that’s so blocked up with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria that it becomes a wide opening at the surface of the skin. When all of this gunk hits the open air (because of the wide opening), it oxidizes and turns the color black. Blackheads should not be confused with being dirty. This is another thing that the little girl told me. She stated that kids told her she wasn’t clean and that is why she is getting acne and blackheads. So not true. Some people are just more prone to these little annoying pest emerging on your skin.

HOW TO PREVENT BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS

Try to wash your face at least 2x a day
Exfoliate a couple of times a week
Don’t over scrub your face or around your nose
Try not to touch your face unless you are cleaning it in the am or pm. Some people only use a washcloth instead of their hands
Look for an oil-free moisturizer
Whatever you do, DO NOT SLEEP in your Makeup’
Use a cleanser with Salicylic acid in the ingredients
Do a chemical peel every couple of months
Use a good moisturizer morning and night to keep skin healthy
Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep pores from getting clogged
Use a charcoal or clay face mask at least twice a week

Keep in mind that all skin types are different so you may need to experiment with different products. Do a test on your skin before using them on your entire face

BEST PRODUCTS TO TREAT BLACKHEADS AND WHITEHEADS

You can try some at home solutions first before going out and buying products at the store. I like Do It Yourself (DIY) ideas before going out to a spa, dermatologist or spending too much on products. These may not work for everyone but its worth trying first.

Baking Soda and Honey

Baking soda is great for unclogging your pores. Adding honey to the concoction can help improve the skins texture and is used in so many products out on the market. This duo is one of the best concoctions for getting rid of blackheads. When you use these two together, they help exfoliate the skin and work well on treating blackheads because they soak up the oil. Mix two teaspoons of Manuka honey with two teaspoons of baking soda and add in a little water to make a paste. Leave it on for at lest 15 minutes then rinse with cool water. You can do this routine up to 2x per week.

Egg Whites

Eggs whites work great on making your skin tighter and drying up excess oil in the pores. If you have tighter skin it will bring the blackheads up to the surface and this allows you to clean  them out easier. Take out the yolk and whip up the egg white. I like to add a little lemon juice to the mix for brightening and helping with uneven skin. Leave it on for about 30 minutes then rinse with cold water and follow up with a good moisturizer.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid, which helps to remove impurities from the skin. This will help to remove oil and other dirt which in turn will help to prevent and treat clogged pores.
