Teething 101

The long nights, cranky baby, tired Mommy…we all go through this process called teething. We as Mom’s feel helpless. We see our babies in pain and want to try everything imaginable to alleviate their discomfort. For some babies, they might have minor discomfort and for other babies it’s a constant painful experience.

Olive James started teething at 4 months. She was fussy and irritable and we had many long nights. Luckily what helped us through the initial 2 bottom teeth and what is still helping us is the teething amber necklace. Ladies, this truly is a life savor. I received Olive’s from my Aunt Nancy. I suggest you do some research and find a good quality necklace. They are so worth the investment- plus they look super cute on. Just remember to take the necklace off at night when the baby is sleeping and keep a close eye when they try and put the necklace in their mouth.

Of course Sophie the giraffe is another must. The long neck and legs give the baby a good angle and they can gnaw on that for comfort. Another option for discomfort and a low cost option is to boil some organic chamomile tea and soak a soft,  clean washcloth in the tea. Then freeze in a ziplock. When the baby needs something soothing, pull it out of the freezer and let them chew on it. A teething ring is great too- Infantino makes a great water teether. Pop it in the freezer and let them enjoy the cool sensation on their gums. One thing I’ve noticed with Olive is she is not a big pacifier user, but what she does is chew on it for relief. So if you have a Natursutten pacifier on hand these work wonders for those painful gums.

Depending on how severe the pain is, some Mom’s give infant Ibuprofen. I prefer to give Olive Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water. It’s dye free- contains all natural ginger and fennel extracts and its vegan and vegetarian approved. It’s mainly to help with stomach discomfort- but it contains chamomile and lemon balm which claim to promote restful sleep. You can thank me later…

And Mom’s don’t forget to get some time to yourself. Even if it’s a longer shower than usual or having your husband let you sleep in for a few more minutes, or asking a friend or relative if they can watch your baby for a half hour. You need to be rested so that you can take care of your baby during this difficult teething stage. A rested Mama is just as important as a rested baby. After all, baby and Mom’s are a team.
