Why Music Matters

“Music is a hidden arithmetic exercise of the soul.” Gottfried Leibniz, German philosopher and mathematician.

Music matters for so many reasons. I am not sure I can list them all but I wanted to express what Music means to so many people the best I can and the benefits it has on the body.

Listening to music can increase the amount of dopamine in the brain, which helps control our pleasure centers. So ultimately, it makes you feel good.  So when you are feeling sad or down, put on a happy song and watch how your mood can change. We usually feel that our emotions are experienced from the heart, but a huge part of emotional stimulus is connected through the brain.

Research has also shown that music affects memory in Alzheimer patients. A study done by the University of California, Davis shows that patients can reconnect to memories from their past by creating a playlist of songs the patient used to listen to and loved. I guess it is similar to hearing a song on the radio that brings back a certain memory you associate the song to. It can have the same effect on Alzheimer or Dementia patients. Doctors use music for patients with brain injuries to create new pathways and music also helps to rewire the brain. Musics effect on the brain is like taking another route because the road you are on is closed on the way to your destination.

I know for me personally, Music has always played a huge part in my life from the age of 11 years old when I joined the band. I remember being so excited when I got to hold my first instrument. I started out with the flute, then moved on to the trombone, tuba and then alto, tenor and finally being satisfied with the baritone saxophone. I wanted to absorb every instrument I possibly could and I guess my ADD played a part too in switching instruments. LOL

Check out my A-Z playlist I’m listening too right now and comment with some of your favorite songs and artist. We would love to know how music has affected your life.
