SELF-CARE 101

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Life can be stressful and many of us don’t take the time to care for ourselves. Self-care is the relationship you have with yourself and will always be one of the most important relationships you will have in your lifetime. So, what is self-care exactly?

WHAT IS SELF-CARE

Self-care is a process of taking steps to promote well-being and healthy functioning for yourself. You are responsible for your own wellbeing. Self-care is not selfish and this is one of the reasons people are less likely to take time out for themselves, but you have to get this out of your mind. Think of the example of when you are on a plane and the flight attendant says to put your oxygen mask on first. You can’t help other people unless you take care of yourself first.

SOCIAL CARE

Being social is key to self-care. With everyday stress, things to do and taking care of a family and home, it is some times hard to make time for your friends, so you end up neglecting these relationships. Having a close connection with others is top of the list when it comes to self-care, so it is important to cultivate those relationships.

MENTAL SELF-CARE

How you react to things will influence your well-being. I always say it’s not about what problems I have in my life, but how I react to them that makes the difference.

Mental self-care is about keeping your mind sharp. I enjoy taking online classes about things I want to know more about, doing puzzles, playing trivia, and practicing self-acceptance.

SPIRITUAL SELF-CARE

Focusing on your spirituality or religion has been shown to lead to a healthier lifestyle. It’s important to nurture your spirit. You can try meditation, reiki, chakra clearing or just finding a way to connect with the universe.

EMOTIONAL SELF-CARE

One of the most important self-care is emotional self-care. It is about having healthy coping skills to deal with sadness and anger, frustration and anxiety. It is ok to talk to someone. It does not make you weak. The strongest and healthiest people are not afraid to open up to someone when they are feeling these emotions. Find ways to recharge when you feel down.

PHYSICAL SELF-CARE

Physical self-care is just that, getting moving. It is about doing a daily exercise that gets your heart rate up. You can take a walk, swim, go to the gym, go hiking or ride a bike, but do something every day.
