Recently we have been hearing a lot about a new therapy that is all the rage. From celebrities to sports stars like Tiger Woods and Terrell Owens, who credits this therapy to healing an injury and preparing him for the Super Bowl game in 2004. The therapy is called Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which is the use of oxygen at a level much higher than atmospheric pressure. The higher concentrations of oxygen are thought to help speed up healing times, so it’s becoming a go to for a lot of hospitals throughout the U.S and for many sports teams. Those dealing with chronic pain should consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy because it also helps push inflammation out of the body, reducing pain.
What happens
during your session?
Your session will start with putting on a medical gown then lying down in the sealed chamber. You will receive the pressurized oxygen through a mask or hood. You can listen to music or watch television to keep you relaxed or talk to a technician during the whole session. How long your session will take depends on what the reason is for the treatment. It can last from 30 minutes, up to 2 hours. A chronic condition will probably last two hours. The number of sessions needed may depend on what your medical condition is but typically people do 20-40 sessions.
