If you have never heard of Ayurveda, you may not be alone. When I mention that I have started using Ayurveda people look at me like I am an alien. Many consider it to be one of the oldest healing sciences. If you look up the word Ayurveda, it means The Science of Life in Sanskrit. It originated in India over 5,000 years ago and many call it the Mother of all Healing. Ayurveda is really concerned with prevention by concentration on your lifestyle choices, finding balance in your life and using herbs. For you to be healthy, it is so important to create balance in your life. Stress is one of the leading causes of diseases so by making changes, you can begin to find that balance and maintain it. Balance should be between your mind, body, the environment and your spirit. It begins with an internal purification, a special diet, herbs massage, yoga and last, meditation.

In Western cultures, we tend to reach for a prescription drug when we have ailments. I know so many people, especially the elderly that take any where from 5-20 prescription meds per day. It is insane how much we flood our bodies with drugs and a lot of the blame lies with our medical community. Don’t get me wrong, I know some people need prescription meds for survival but we can find alternative medicines to substitute for many of those pills taken on a daily basis. Not everything a doctor hands out is a necessity. Ask questions to your physician and find out if there are other ways to control the issue or do your own research. If you start Ayurvedic, it is imperative to discuss with your physician because many are not required to meet the safety standards that conventional medicines are so the herbs are listed as a dietary supplement. The way I look at any dietary supplement is just that. A supplement to your standard, conventional medical care, especially if you are being treated for a serious condition.
