Mexico’s Hidden Gem- Isla Holbox

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Just northwest of Cancun, Mexico lies the beautiful island of Holbox. The island is just 26 miles long and is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico. There are only two ways to get to Holbox, you can take a 15-minute ferry from Chiquila or fly to Holbox since no cars are allowed. The island has a laidback vibe to it and is full of beautiful birds, from pelicans, ducks, flamingos and other species. The island is full of marine life, but the best to view is the whale shark. Swimming with the whale shark is a must on your vacation because you will leave with a feeling of complete awe. They are huge weighing up to 30,000 lbs and a length of over 40 feet. They are not dangerous so don’t be scared.

Best time to see the whale sharks is June to September so it may be the busiest time too. The rainy season runs May until November.

Best things to do

First and foremost, you want to hit up the beaches. Punta Mosquito to the east and Punta Coco is to your west. These are the beaches you want to visit for sure. To get to Punta Coco, you want to get a golf cart ride because it can take around 30 minutes.

Punta Coco is one of the best places to relax and watch the sunset. You can also experience the bio luminescence at night,  which is a sight you won’t want to miss. Recently in California you may have seen the videos of whales and dolphins swimming in bright lights. But seeing them has to be the right time.

If you are an animal lover, stop by and volunteer at the Refugio Holbox Animal Sanctuary. It is a wonderful shelter that takes in domestic animals like cats and dogs plus other wildlife. They are always looking for volunteers to help out.

Quick note, bring cash because most places prefer peso and the ATM can be a little difficult some times.

Visit Races Bar for some of the best seafood dishes right on the beach.

Kayak through the mangrove forest

Eat breakfast at La Isla Del Colibri

Where to Stay

Check out the beautiful Puerto Holbox hotel which is just a few blocks from downtown and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. It is tranquil and private and a must stay.

If you are looking for luxury, check out Ser Casasandra which was one of the first luxury properties on the island. You get a beautiful spa, yoga, a poolside bar and restaurant with anything you need.

Punta Caliza is somewhat new and is built entirely in and around a pool. Come on, being able to open up to a pool from your room? You can’t ask for much better. And what I love is it is a small, family owned hotel.

Spirit Holbox Hotel has an amazing rooftop restaurant that is the heart of the whole place. The facility and the amenities of this hotel are a once in a lifetime experience.

Won’t it be lovely to get to travel to international destinations again?
