Things to See and Do on Mackinac Island

Recently I have been wanting to travel more around the United States and since we have all been forced to limit travel due to Corona, now more than ever I want to get started. We have a wealth of places to visit here in the U.S and I really think Americans need to take more time to see how beautiful the country is that we live in. On my list is the gorgeous island of Mackinac that sits on the Straits of Mackinac. Mackinac is one of the gems of the state of Michigan.

If you are looking for a slow pace of life with no cars, Mackinac is the place for you. You can get around by bike, on foot or by horse. It is like going back in time and I think with the craziness of today’s world, it would be a welcomed change. Taking the ferry is the way to go since you will get some gorgeous views on your ride over. As of now, I think you would have to wait until after Memorial Day as they have delayed their reopening. When you do get to visit, check out our list of  things to see and do.

Let us know if you have ideas for our readers on what to see in Mackinac. XOXO

Visit Arch Rock, which is an arc made of natural limestone and you get a great view of Lake Huron. It stands 146 above the water.

Wings of Mackinac is a beautiful place to walk with hundreds of butterflies. They offer gift shops, outdoor crafts and educational exhibits to enjoy as well.

Take a horse drawn carriage ride around the island. If you have kids, they will love the experience.

Stop off for some famous Mackinac fudge. There are around 13 places you can treat yourself to yummy fudge on the island.

Stop for dinner at the Grand Hotel, Pancake House and Grille, Mr. B’s, Millie’s on Main, or the Mighty Mac Hamburgers.

Take a tour of the Fort Mackinac which dates back to the Colonial Era when the French, British and Americans fought over the Great Lakes.

After dark, check out dancing at the Grand Hotels Terrace Room, catch some great entertainment at Horn’s Gaslight Bar & Grille, Cawthorne’s Village Inn or Pink Pony. Or if a bar is not your style, check out Music in the Park during peak season. It is a great place to watch live music from folk, country, rock or blues from under the stars.

Where to Stay

The Grand Hotel is over 100 years old and is known to have U.S. Presidents and celebrities stay here back in the day. Visiting in early spring or fall will lower the price per room.

Inn on Mackinac is located really close to downtown so after a long day of hiking or biking, you won’t have far to walk back to your room.
